Overview

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to maximize automotive vehicle, school bus, and automotive equipment operation through efficient repair and maintenance practices to extend the service life of each item. Employees in this classification perform basic to intermediate level mechanical service and repair work for both diesel and gasoline powered automotive vehicles and equipment, and are responsible for inspecting tasks upon completion for adherence to technical specifications and principles of safe vehicle operation. Emphasis of the work is on diagnosing and analyzing vehicle problems and preventive maintenance; incumbents exercise judgment in referring major and/or complex service requirements to the shop garage. Performs related work as directed.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.

Performs daily routine of checking automotive vehicles for road worthiness and to address any real or perceived compromises in safe operating conditions.

Responds to road emergencies in the event of breakdown; performs on site diagnosis and troubleshooting in identifying source of the failure; drops drive lines for vehicles requiring transport for repair.

Utilizes computerized, and electronic devices to analyze and diagnose methods in identifying service, replacement and vehicle/bus/equipment repair needs. This includes analyzing electronically controlled engines, electrical systems, transmissions and brakes.

Utilizes both PCs and hand held electronic devices.

Determines feasibility for onsite repair and performs such accordingly, or refers major and/or complex service requirements to the shop garage.

Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules as needed, i.e., changing oil, tires, transmission fluid, tune ups, filter and belt replacement.

Repairs or replaces damaged or missing parts and components, i.e., mirrors, glass, windshields, windows, doors, wipers.

Performs various testing tasks in ensuring vehicle road worthiness and to ensure vehicles are prepared according to established route schedules, i.e., checking air systems and valves, tire pressures and conditions, testing electrical pathways.

Performs service and repair on various automotive components and devices, i.e., mufflers, water hoses, starters, brakes, tires, points, plugs, radiators, cylinders, rotors, horns, wheelchair lifts, as needed.

Diagnoses, repairs, and/or replaces electrical/electronic lighting systems, control systems, cooling systems, transmissions, starting and charging systems.

Road tests vehicles to ascertain repair effectiveness; performs final inspection upon completion of service/repair prior to release.

Performs regulatory School Bus Inspections with no more than a 10% return/incomplete rate.

Utilizes various standard automotive mechanics tools and specialized diagnostic and testing equipment, i.e., torque meters, lathes, voltage meters, hydraulic jacks, air guns, grinders.

Processes and maintains work order records and other required documentation accurately concerning diagnosis, repair/service performed, and parts and supplies used. No more than 5% returned/incomplete rate on vehicle repairs.

Must be able to attain/maintain at least 65% productivity rate (as determined by work orders) and no more than 20% above individual repair times (as determined by industry standard labor time guides).

Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.

Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years basic to intermediate progressively skilled automotive repair experience, the majority of which shall be in service and repair of diesel powered automotive vehicles and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must have a valid CDL class “B” license, with passenger endorsement, or must obtain within six (6) months of hiring date and maintain throughout tenure in position. Must obtain within twelve (12) months of hiring date, a valid School Bus Inspector certificate and maintain throughout tenure in position.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, design, and advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; calculate decimals and percentages.

Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert very heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate textures. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, odors, dust, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, and toxic/poisonous agents.
