Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform basic grounds work related to the care and upkeep of school district property. Employees in this classification generally function in an entry level capacity, and function independently within scope of abilities, or participate in projects as part of a work crew. Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, grounds maintenance, mowing, and tree trimming, and landscaping. Work objectives are to maintain cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of school district property. Essential functions as outlined herein are performed according to assigned area. Performs related work as directed.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
Functions independently, or as part of a work crew engaged in school district property maintenance projects and tasks.
Performs grounds maintenance activities, i.e., mowing, weed-eating, edging, blowing, planting foliage and mulching.
Performs shrubbery and tree maintenance activities, i.e., pruning limbs, shaping hedges, cutting branches.
Operates various electric, gas and manually powered tools and equipment, i.e., saws, sprayers, air compressors, mowers, blowers, weed-eaters, hedge trimmers.
Assists with various facilities and trades maintenance and repair tasks within scope of abilities.
Ensures cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of district property; addresses safety concerns in a time efficient manner; reports real or potential maintenance/repair needs.
Ensures proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, and materials utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe use and operation of equipment, tools, and materials.
Performs clean up and work site restoration activities, i.e. disposing waste and debris.
Responds to and takes appropriate actions in the event of emergency or critical incidents to resolve, confine or otherwise prevent potentially injurious or hazardous conditions.
Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.
Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by any previous experience demonstrating ability to fulfill the physical and dexterity requirements of the work, as applicable to the assigned maintenance area (i.e., grounds maintenance, mowing, and tree trimming); or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
This position requires operation of District fleet vehicles in performance of duties. Employees must maintain a valid Florida Driver’s license and meet the requirements of the District’s Safe Driving Plan. This is a Non-OTETA/CDL position.
Effective August 24, 2009, all new hires to this position must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); previous incumbents holding this position without a break in service are not required to have this screening.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate standard hand-held tools, and electric, gas and manually powered equipment and machinery and computer.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and advisory data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition and subtraction.
Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (5 - 40 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as weather condition of hot/cold temperatures and rain, dust, noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, strong odors and toxic/poisonous agents.
