Overview

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled diagnostic, repair, maintenance, programming and service tasks for the school district’s fire alarm, intercom and PA systems. Employees in this classification function with considerable independence and latitude in judgment concerning methods, materials, and priority, and provide lead worker direction to communications technician staff. Position is capable of diagnosing and repairing complex/difficult issues unable to be resolved by lesser skilled technician personnel. Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, addressable fire alarm systems, intercom systems, and stage sound systems. Position coordinates assigned work orders in a manner to minimize disruption in school district activities. Performs related work as directed.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.

Performs skilled to advanced electrical work in various electrical and electronics technology installation, repair, maintenance and service tasks for the school district’s fire alarm and intercom systems.

Provides lead worker technical assistance and, when required, instruction to other technician personnel; provides training in all facets of fire alarm and communication systems installations and diagnostics.

Reviews work conducted by contract service providers; notifies contractors of and follows up on contractor warranty service and repairs.

Conducts work site inspections for the purpose of determining scope of work, coordinating setup schedules, and developing materials, cost, and labor estimates.

Reviews architectural drawings, diagrams, schematics, technical instruction manuals, blueprints and related design specifications in planning and performing communication installations and service.

Installs, maintains, services, and/or repairs electronic communications devices and systems, i.e., portable classroom connections, fire alarm systems, clocks, intercoms, stage sound systems.

Responds to complaints and service requests; provides on-site diagnostic and installation and repair service; determines economic feasibility of service or replacement; provides documentation supporting recommendations.

Evaluates new devices and systems for purchase; provides recommendation and documentation supporting such.

Provides instruction and technical guidance and support to school staff in proper use of fire alarm and communication systems and devices.

Performs preventive maintenance on communications devices and systems according to prescribed schedules to extend service life of equipment and to maintain physical integrity of school property.

Performs physically demanding tasks in the installation and connection of various systems, i.e., digging line ditches and trenches, accessing lines below and above facilities and structures (portables, sidewalks, and scoreboards).

Fills out and maintains work orders and purchase orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity logs, maintenance records concerning job costing, materials and labor estimates.

Coordinates assigned work orders in a manner to minimize disruption in routine district activities; coordinates activities with other technicians or district personnel as applicable.

Responds to emergency or critical incidents in order to confine, resolve, and/or prevent disruption in district activities or prevent hazardous conditions.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by minimum five (5) years progressively knowledgeable and skilled work experience in installation and service of electrical and electronic communication devices and fire alarm systems, preferably in a large educational or similar institutional environment; with ability satisfy the physical requirements of the work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license. NICET II certification must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, design, and advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; utilize geometric principles; calculate decimals and percentages.

Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

Environmental Factors: Tasks are performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as electrical currents when performing installation tasks.
