Overview

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled to advanced electrical trades work related to various installation, maintenance and electrical repair tasks and projects for the school district. Employees in this classification function with considerable independence and latitude in judgment concerning methods, materials, and priority of assigned work orders. Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, new construction, outdoor structures, and interior facilities. Position coordinates assigned work projects in a manner to minimize disruption in school district activities. Work may include leading work crews when applicable to the assigned work orders. Performs related work as directed.

Responsibilities and Qualifications


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.

Performs skilled to advanced electrical installation, maintenance, service, and repair tasks for the school district.

Receives work orders and coordinates project tasks; prepares materials and labor estimates; determines equipment, materials, tools and supplies required per job site.

Installs, services, and/or repairs electrical systems, fixtures and related electrical services for the district, i.e., lighting systems, portable classroom service, transformer connections, electrical panels and switches, lift stations and treatment plants, new construction.

Services or replaces parts and components including, but not limited to, wiring, relay switches, motors and pumps, control and distribution panels, circuit breakers and fuses, conduit, outlets.

Ensures compliance with and adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, building, and safety standards regarding electrical installation, service, and repair activities.

Functions independently, as assigned, or provides lead worker guidance and assistance to work crews in more complex/difficult projects and installations.

Works collaboratively and confers with contractor service providers, as applicable to assigned work orders.

Fills out and maintains work orders and purchase orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity logs, maintenance records concerning assigned service vehicle and equipment.

Performs mathematical calculations in installation, maintenance or repair activities, i.e., materials dimensions, calculating amperage and wattage, voltage drops and conductor sizing, wire and conduit circumferences.

Utilizes various hand held and diagnostic tools and equipment specific to the trade, i.e., voltage and amperage meters, cable locators, wire cutters/crimpers, generators.

Operates automotive equipment, as applicable to assigned work orders, i.e., bucket trucks, tractors, trenching machines, flatbed trucks.

Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized per work site; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.

Responds to emergency or critical incidents in order to confine, resolve, and/or prevent electrical failures, fires or other hazardous conditions.

Reviews drawings, blue prints, sketches and/or related specifications relevant to project tasks and sequencing.

Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.

Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by minimum five (5) years progressively skilled and knowledgeable commercial and/or industrial journey level experience in electrical trades work, with demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical codes, architectural drawings, and electrical specifications; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license class “D”.

Effective August 24, 2009, all new hires to this position must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); previous incumbents holding this position without a break in service are not required to have this screening.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or reconfigure electrical systems and electrical service components, requiring strict adherence to prescribed standards and specifications.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, design, and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; utilize geometric principles.

Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate textures. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, bright or dim lighting.
