The Security Screener Specialist job is a position within OCPS District Police. Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to provide for the security and environmental safekeeping of the district’s main centralized office locations owned and operated by the School Board of Orange County, specifically the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center (RBELC), public schools and other non-school district-based sites. Employees in this classification are responsible for ensuring all persons entering the RBELC, Schools, or other non-school district-based sites are authorized on the premises. Duties include effectively communicating with visitors to provide assistance and assisting with the Districts Weapon Screening Program, this includes conducting weapon screening operations at both the RBELC as well as weapon screening operations conducted in either the school or transportation environment. Position addresses security violations in accordance with prescribed district policies and procedures and is responsible for reporting illegal activities to appropriate administration and/or enforcement entities. Essential functions as outlined herein are performed according to district police direction. Performs related work as directed.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
Conducts scanning of students, staff and members of the public with handheld metal detection wands and walk through metal detection devices.
Verifies that employees, visitors and students have proper credentials to access their respective location.
Provides security screening services in support of board meetings and other activities, as directed.
Gives direction and provides assistance to employees, visitors, and guests in support of board meetings, district-based activities, and emergencies, as needed or directed. Communicates and directs students, staff and visitors through the screening process, works with law enforcement to insure searches are conducted thoroughly and in accordance with industry standards.
Searches packages, bags and other items for contraband, conducts training with school and other district personnel on proper search techniques and legal/operational directives on conducting screening operations.
Monitors CCTV cameras for illicit behavior, while not engaged in screening assignments. Will monitor and report suspicious and illegal behavior to school administrative staff and law enforcement as appropriate.
Identifies, reports and resolves security breaches.
Works under the direction of district police to conduct random and directed safety screenings.
Represents the district with a positive, professional manner.
Remains observant at all times; greets staff, guests, and vendors in an attentive manner. Communicates effectively with other members of the security team, district police and district employees.
Works effectively with others to ensure a safe learning and working environment.
Compiles statistical and demographical information, this includes observation skills as well as interviewing staff and students to correctly document information. Determines appropriate search areas, sets up, calibrates and operates walk through metal detection devices.
Collaborates with other district police and security officers to ensure effective protection and coverage.
Performs workspace and equipment inspections, as directed.
Utilizes computers and tablets with proficiency; learns new software programs and security systems as needed.
Utilizes portable radio and effectively communicates utilizing the radio. Communicates on security radio with police dispatch, communicates with external law enforcement partners when appropriate as it relates to screening operations or CCTV monitoring.

Inspects facility areas and reports potential hazards when appropriate (i.e., unlocked gates, doors and windows.
Completes daily reports, to include but not limited to, screening and monitoring activities, daily activities, incidents reports, and maintenance reports.
Operates a district vehicle, responsible for care and maintenance of vehicle.
Provides timely and accurate reporting.
Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED; three (3) years previous security, military, law enforcement, or correctional experience, with demonstrated investigative and interpersonal communication skills for monitoring and resolving a variety of student conflicts or outbursts; or any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions. Must possess strong interpersonal skills, good observation skills and judgement, and the ability to work with security, communications, and law enforcement team members. Requires an understanding of the juvenile court system. Requires knowledge of the code of conduct with infractions, consequences and behaviors.
Requires successful completion and ability to remain current in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), first aid and CPR training; requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license; requires the ability to obtain and remain up to date on mandated training classes required for the position; requires satisfactory district background investigation.
The incumbent is considered to be “essential personnel” during an emergency and can be subject to being held over or called back to a district location at all times.
